Normal people, on a normal weekday, off to the opera for an evening of something cultural. Imagine that. I don’t think that happens a lot in the Netherlands. In Berlin, on the other hand, people still appreciate the finer things in life.

I believe so. It is also in other countries east of the iron curtain. But as everywhere it become more than luxury especially when price for ticket is comparable with cost of week basic needs of a family.
Interesting to hear that the performing arts were and still are more common in the countries east of the former iron curtain. Why would that be the case, do you think?
