Polar Bear Plunge

We Dutch call it the “Nieuwjaarsduik”, but it seems that “Polar Bear Plunge” might be the English term I’m looking for. (Going by Wikipedia, this tradition is known in Canada, the US, the UK and our speck on the map called the Netherlands.)

Anyway, the tradition. After a short warm-up (not shown), people run towards the water to take a dive on New Year’s Day. To be continued…

On a personal note, of course, I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for 2017! I haven’t been very active here the past year, or even past years, and… well, I’m not going to make any promises about this year, but at least I want to give it a try again. No time like the present to start!

Ah yes, the ol’ Polar Bear Plunge… or, er, um – however you Dutch say it!

I was going to photograph one such plunge a few years back when I was out in Buffalo, Wyo… except, that one was like a 3 meter by 4 meter rectangular hole cut into the ice of frozen Lake DeSmet, that people one, or two, at a time, decided to jump into … but, ended up never doing so.

So, did you yourself ever end up taking the plunge yourself? I guess, I will have to keep on reading!
